Reflections

Experience

Before I go more in depth of what I experienced throughout this module, I would like to share that I am the one that wrote a pun every week on the whiteboard. I got overwhelmed when I saw Mr Shamsul posted the Week 13 one on his Facebook. Glad that some of them, if not one of them made your day!

Throughout this module, we are to think more open and more creative. Time always feels like it's not enough. There are some works that I wanted to improve more on, or make some changes but can't as I have to move on to the following projects. With this module, I am forced to think out of the box, as well as my comfort zone. Compared to the first semester, this module is more interactive as we have to do presentations. Some may feel lucky, yet I felt that it's a pity that my group didn't get the chance to present, as I think we'll really get to learn more by participating in one. I really enjoyed Mr Vinod's sharing as it really brought upon a lot of realization, especially that it is a talk based on experience.

By the end of the module, it feels like a small graduation, as for me, I wouldn't be having class as much as before in next semester. Even though a lot people might say that Mr Vinod is strict, but I quite enjoy the strictness (this sounds weird haha) given, as I know, it's for my own good. Not to be missed, but I really enjoyed the tension of  the Typography and Advanced Typography module. There's not much lecturer that would actually give us advice in class, in regards to what we'll experience in the course.

As I feel like I will keep on writing if I don't stop, I shall stop writing about my experience as it is starting to look like an essay. All in all, a really really BIG THANK YOU to both lecturers for their time and energy spent on us.

Observation

I've observed that a lot of classmates has really good works and this motivates me to do more. However, there are still works that I'm unsatisfied with and wanted to improve more on. It is interesting during the Q&A sessions of the presentations as you can get questions you never think of as well as answers that are unexpected. Other than that, I feel that everyone's style is getting more distinguishable as I think a lot of people have their direction clearer.

Nonetheless, I notice that this module requires us to think creatively, and to observe every little thing that is around us, as I think, that's where originality begins. In this case, I am able to identify my weaknesses and what I must improved on.

Findings

This module, compared to the previous one, requires more observatory skills as well as exploration. Even though it's not easy, yet I quite enjoy this module as we're not limited and is more free. I realized further reading really helps us in our design thinking which would really improve our works. I really regretted that I didn't done too much further reading prior to each exercises and projects and was always done after. I will, and must do further reading and more more more research beforehand.

In this module, I also found out that originality really comes from our inside, and our surroundings. Anything as small, or as big may be a great inspiration for us to work on.

After listening to Joseph's experience (and sometimes giving him a visit), I feel that it's quite sad that the module is going a little bit off track (we went to stalk the junior's work). As I know review from TES is quite important, but I hope that the lecturers can stay to their visions and goals of the modules.

All in all, this module really brought me to a new understanding of typography and given me a little confidence and understanding of what I am lack of.
