Reflection

Experience

My experience in this module is like riding a roller coaster. It feels like I been through an adrenaline rush even though it is already week 14 now as I am typing this. Countless art blocks, rejected attempts, attempts of trying to procrastinate, trying to meet up with expectation, and the feeling of accomplishment when the lecturer finally approves your work is what sums up this module, in my opinion. There are times when we complained that the lecturers that they are too strict, but I can really feel the passion of the lecturer towards this subject and it is for our own good. . How I see typography has drastically changed since I started this module. In conclusion, this module really reflects the proverb 'no pain, no gain'. It is only if you're willing to open up to absorb more, that's only when you can improve yourself.

Observation

By being in this class, my observation towards the various design in typography around has changed a lot. What has been taken for granted all this while in the designs with typography is now what I cherished. I once saw a typography poster stating that bad typography is everywhere, but good typography is invisible. The choice of typeface, how we arrange it in a composition, the size, practically almost everything is important in creating a design that uses typography, as the message you wanted to convey can be easily misunderstood if there's a slight mistake in the elements.

Findings

I found out that this module is really important to me, not just as a student, but also as a designer. As we are (half-forced) to read books related to typography every week, it really allows me to have a deeper understanding in typography. It also at the same time gives me a lot of inspirations of what we can do with just texts. Through this module, I also realize that typography isn't just about texts, but making texts come alive. I hope more and more people can understand the importance of typography, as most typographers are really taken for granted. For example, typographers that write the prices for products in those hypermarkets. Through this module, it really opened me up to the various diversity typography can give.
