Rationale
Cultural identity refers to identification with, or sense of belonging to, a particular group based on various cultural categories, including nationality, ethnicity, race, gender, and religion (Key Concepts in Intercultural Dialogue, No. 22, 2014). Born and growing up in a country that is rich with cultures, particularly from Sabah, I realized that the rich amount of culture as well as the cultural identity of the city of Kota Kinabalu is not shown through local designs. Dr. Ismail, an Associate Professor of Universiti Malaysia Sabah's School of Art Studies strongly feels that Sabah should have an official icon or symbol that serves as a cultural identity, representing the State and her people (Daily Express Online, December 2009).
A lot of the designs that can be seen by the streets is very westernized or even globalized. A lot of the artists or designers uses websites such as Pinterest, Tumblr and Instagram as their source of reference, which a lot of the works are done by western artists. In a way, the design is slowly losing their cultural identity. As being said by a Catalonian architect Antonio Gaudi: "To be original is to go back to the origin." Design plays a role in preserving cultural identity of the place. However, this does not mean that the designs should directly be extracted from the native codices or pottery and make a replica of their graphic style. Yet to think and find them in our source of inspiration (Hernandez, 2011). Quoted from a Dutch historian Johan Huizinga, "If we are to preserve culture, we must continue to create it."

Feedback
Week 1
Ms Jinchi commented that my topic is interesting and that I should do more readings regarding the topic.
Week 2
Ms Jinchi said that my topic for the research is interesting and suggested some ways of data collection methods, such as interviewing the people from my source of information.
Week 3
Ms Jinchi helped me identified the keywords for my research topic, which is preserve and understanding. Other than that, the research objective should be linked with the research question.
Week 4
Ms Jinchi said that the in-text reference should be done after a sentence (if referred). Other than that, I have to specify which type of designs I am talking about in my problem statement. Example given is promotional design. Next, I need to get a source to support my statement saying that the young generations of Sabah lacks awareness and understandings towards the history of the state. Lastly, I need to specify what research I am working on in the problem statement.
