Final Project: Stop Motion
01.04.2019 (Week 1)
On the first day of class, we were briefed on our final project in class. After that, we were given a task to find 3 of our favorite stop motion videos.
I like how the whole set up is done by only Legos and simple lighting. It is a recreation of a MV. I actually accidentally stumble on this video in Facebook. The most surprising part is that this video is done by a 12 years old. Even though some of the shots are blurry and some editing are not as professional as a lot of other videos you can found in the net, but this video let me understand that stop motion video isn't something that's super hard, as long as you're willing to put effort into it.
2. Pingu
For the second video, I chose a series I'm pretty sure most people are familiar with ---Pingu! I like it because other than the animation itself, the message transmit through the story line can be understand by everyone, even though you have no idea what the character is talking about. Somehow you just know what they're talking about. I watched the making of Pingu on YouTube and was so bedazzled with the creation of the well known series. And was even more surprised that it was done so long ago.
3. Stop-Motion Karate
I like this video because unlike most other stop motion videos, it combined some other camera angles that focused on the person's face emotion within the action scenes, which made the whole video more interesting.
Other than sharing 3 of our favorite stop motion videos, we were also tasked to provide an idea for our final project with the theme "I Dreamed a Dream" with a duration of one minute or less.
When I saw the theme, the first thing that popped into my mind was infinite loop of a situation. This is because of the theme "I Dreamed a Dream", which in my opinion was you dreamed about something in your dream, and to wake up realizing that dream is a dream in your dream. Sounds complicated with words but it somehow will end up with an infinite loop.
Week 10 - Week 14: Planning and Execution of Final Project
For this project, we can choose either to do it alone or to do it in pairs. I chose to do it in pairs, and I paired up with Lee Yu Hui. After deciding our partners, we started to brainstorm for the storyboard.
Below attached is the presentation prepared for the pre production planning:
After getting consultation from both lecturers, me and Yu Hui started planning out things we need for the filming. We decided to use normal video shooting for the opening and ending part of the video, whilst using paper cut outs for stop motions in the middle to indicate the dream part.
After finish preparing everything, we then do our stop motion shooting in the studio. Later, the video is cut and compiled by Yu Hui.
Video clip:
After getting the clip, I proceed on working on the audios of the video. I used royalty free sounds from Freesound.org and from dova-s.jp.
For my first attempt of the audio done:
After getting consultations again for the audio, some changes were made. The final outcome of the video is as below.

Reflection:
At the start of the project, I'm really worried as we would not have enough time to finish everything as there's also other projects to take care of. The preparation is also quite time consuming, which resulted us in getting stress. However, to our surprise, the shooting is done is a few hours, to our reliefs.
Through this project, paper cut out may seem easy but it is not. It's actually quite time consuming and there are some times me and Yu Hui regretted as to why we chose this method. But looking at the outcome, it seems to be okay and that's good.
It took me quite some, if not a lot of time to search for the suitable BGM and sound effects for the audio. Especially in searching for the classical music that has to be upbeat and not too slow paced. The sounds really bring out the environment of the place and I'm satisfied with it. My most favorite part would be the concert part, as it really feels like one except that the jump there is quite awkward.
Nonetheless, this project is really a good experience especially in teaching me a lesson about time management.
